# What is a headless CRM?

A headless CRM keeps the records, rules and history of a CRM in a back end and lets you work it from another interface. For a small team, that interface can be an AI client you already use, such as Claude or ChatGPT, connected over MCP. Screens become optional; the data and permissions stay in the CRM.

## What does headless mean for a CRM?

It means the CRM has no front end you must use. The records, the rules and the history live in a back end, and you reach them from another interface. A screen can still exist, but it is optional, not the product.

The term comes from web development. A headless content system stores pages and serves them to any website or app that asks. A headless CRM does the same with leads, companies, deals, tasks and sequences.

For a small team in 2026, the other interface is usually an AI client. You open Claude or ChatGPT, connect the CRM over the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and ask in plain words. The AI calls the CRM's tools, and the CRM stores the result and enforces its rules.

## How is a headless CRM different from an API first CRM?

An API first CRM exposes every action through an API, but you still need a front end: one you build, one you buy, or the vendor's own app. A headless CRM for a small team skips that step, because the front end is an AI client that already exists.

That changes who can use it. An API first CRM suits a company with developers who want to wire the CRM into their own product. A headless CRM run from an AI client suits a founder or a small team with no developer time, who already spend their day in a chat window.

The back end has to do more work in return. An AI is a different caller from a developer's script. It sends batches, retries after a timeout and reads long lists. The page on [AI native CRMs](https://sashimicrm.com/ai-native-crm) covers what a back end needs to handle that well.

## What does Salesforce mean by headless?

For Salesforce, headless is an enterprise story. It announced Headless 360 at its TDX conference in March 2026, and on 26 August 2026 it announced Salesforce in Claude, with sales skills inside Claude Cowork, first for pilot customers, as [reported by VentureBeat](https://venturebeat.com/orchestration/salesforce-just-put-its-entire-crm-inside-claude-and-says-youll-never-need-its-app-again). Its buyer is the enterprise (as of October 2026).

That is why searches for headless CRM now mostly return Salesforce news. Both meanings share the core idea: the AI becomes the interface and the CRM stays the system of record. The difference is the buyer. Salesforce sells to large sales organisations with governance needs. A small business needs the same idea without an enterprise rollout.

## Who is a headless CRM a good fit for?

People who already work in an AI client every day. If you write, plan and research in Claude or ChatGPT, a headless CRM puts your pipeline in the same place, so you stop switching to another app to update it.

It also fits operators who run several businesses. A headless CRM can give each business its own workspace and each workspace its own connection to your AI. When each connection only sees the workspace it was approved for, as in Sashimi, one business's leads stay separate from another's. The page on a [CRM for multiple businesses](https://sashimicrm.com/use-cases/multiple-businesses) covers that setup.

## Who is a headless CRM not a good fit for?

Teams that want a visual pipeline board as their daily tool. If your sales meeting happens in front of a drag-and-drop board, a CRM with no screen by default will feel like a step back.

It is also a poor fit if nobody on the team uses an AI client, or if your company does not allow connecting outside tools to one. In both cases a traditional CRM with a good app is the better choice.

## How does Sashimi work as a headless CRM?

Sashimi is built this way. It is a sales CRM that you run from Claude, ChatGPT or another remote MCP client, with no UI by default. The connector is the main surface: leads, companies, deals, tasks and email sequences are all reached through it.

Each business gets its own workspace, and one connection serves one workspace. Roles are checked on every call, a personal link can be read-only, and every AI call is logged. The full tool list is on the [Sashimi MCP server](https://sashimicrm.com/mcp) page, and the client guides are for [Claude](https://sashimicrm.com/for/claude) and [ChatGPT](https://sashimicrm.com/for/chatgpt).

A few things still need a web screen, so a web app exists for them:

- signing in and approving a connection for a workspace;
- workspace settings and integration keys, which are never sent through the chat;
- revoking connections, which your AI can also do with the `revoke_connection` tool;
- connecting Gmail for sequence emails (beta).

To connect, you need a Claude plan that allows custom connectors or ChatGPT with developer mode on the web. On Claude Team or Enterprise, an owner adds the connector. The step-by-step setup is in the [connection guide](https://sashimicrm.com/connect), and [how Sashimi connects](https://sashimicrm.com/how-it-works) explains what happens at each step.

On-demand screens, built when you ask your AI for a view, are beta. Sashimi's own built-in agents are off by default; your AI does the reasoning. The [security page](https://sashimicrm.com/security) explains roles and isolation.

Sashimi is in private beta: access is by invitation and free while the beta lasts. The planned launch price starts at $15 a month per account for Solo, with 3 workspaces and 1 seat; see [pricing](https://sashimicrm.com/pricing). Nothing can be bought today.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a headless CRM?

It is a CRM whose data, rules and permissions live in a back end, with no screen you are required to use. You work it from another interface, which for a small team is usually an AI client such as Claude or ChatGPT connected over MCP.

### How is a headless CRM different from an API first CRM?

An API first CRM exposes everything through an API but still expects you to build or buy the front end. A headless CRM for small teams uses an AI client that already exists as that front end, so there is nothing to build.

### What is the best headless CRM for a small business?

The one that fits how you already work. Check that it covers the whole CRM from your AI client, keeps each business separate, enforces roles on every call and logs what the AI did. Sashimi is built for people who already work in Claude or ChatGPT and run more than one business; it is in private beta.
